Ah, the infamous junk drawer – we all have at least one! Let’s tackle this major clutter centre to kick off the MVMT 14 Bags in 14 Days decluttering challenge.

Now, for those unicorns amongst us who are unaware of what a junk drawer is, this is the catch-all space (or spaces) for random items in your home. Papers, pens, mail, scissors, rubber bands, cords, you name it… these are all likely clutter culprits that can accumulate. Once those items are out of sight and out of mind, they tend to stay there. Don’t wait until the drawer is filled to capacity! Start here for an easy win in the Decluttering Challenge.

EMPTY YOUR JUNK DRAWER

This might sound daunting, but the first thing you need to do is take everything out of the drawer and lay it out in front of you. This will help you see what’s there. Make sure you have enough space to see everything at once.

KEEP, GIVE, THROW AWAY

You’ll instantly recognise that some items have outlived their usefulness. Junk mail? School notices for events that have passed? Pens that have dried up? Takeout menus that you can find online? Toss those out! They can go right into your Day 1 bag.

Some items might still be useful, just not to you. Do you really need 4 pairs of scissors? There’s a reason that gifted keychain is hidden in a drawer. Put unwanted items that are still in good condition in your donate bag.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to see what you’re keeping. This takes us to our next step!

SORT AND ORGANISE

Everything in front of you is wanted, useful, and in good condition. However, does it all really belong in a junk drawer? Sort items so they are together with other similar items. If there’s somewhere better for those items to be, put them away where they belong. For example, you might want to make some items more readily accessible using the Umbra Hammock Organiser.

Once you have done this, organise the remaining items. We love how drawer organisers keep items separated and easy to find. Alternatively, you might choose a more eclectic mix of small containers within your drawer.

MAINTAIN YOUR SYSTEM

Now that your junk drawer is looking beautifully organised, keep it up! On a daily basis, take care to follow the system that you have set up. Once monthly, schedule a time to eliminate junk from the drawer to avoid amassing clutter again.

Congratulations! You’ve filled up your first bag of the MVMT 14 Bags in 14 Days Decluttering Challenge!
