You got a preview of how to declutter your catchall spaces when you sorted out your junk drawer. Well, this is the big leagues. Today, we’re tackling the garage, appliance cupboards, hurricane supply cabinets, storage rooms, basements… anywhere that collects clutter. Without further ado, let’s get started with Day 11 of the MVMT 14 Bags in 14 Days Decluttering Challenge.

Depending on which space you’re decluttering, there may not be enough room to empty everything at once. That’s fine. Work in sections to ensure that you have seen everything in the space and determined if you need to keep it. If you’re not keeping an item, decide if you will donate, sell or throw it away.

The MVMT Rule of One definitely applies to these spaces, with the exception of sentimental items that are in longterm storage. You can, however, look through those sentimental items to see if there’s a better way you can keep them and enjoy them.

If you’re lamenting the cost of a barely-used item, just remember that you’ve already spent the money. Whether you keep it in a corner collecting dust or give it away, that money is gone. In fact, you could recuperate some of the money by selling the item. You get some money back, you clear space, and you make someone else happy. Win, win, win!

In Bermuda, we keep supplies on hand in case of hurricanes. Take this opportunity to check your supplies. Are the batteries still within their dates? Do they still work? Make sure your flashlights and radios work and that your first aid kit is well-stocked. Get rid of any hurricane supplies that have expired.

Time to replace your first aid kit? Try the Medi Aid First Aid & Wellness Kit.

Once you declutter your catchall spaces, chances are that you’ll have to do it again. It’s just the nature of the beast. Set up a system in these spaces to make the next decluttering even easier. Put like items with like, organise them and label them. Also, schedule a regular time, every three months for example, to quickly declutter these areas to avoid build up of unwanted items.

Congratulations! You’ve filled up your eleventh bag of the MVMT 14 Bags in 14 Days Decluttering Challenge!
